Cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 - 14 years, ranking behind only accidents. It is projected that 1 in every 330 children will be diagnosed with some type of Cancer prior to reaching age 14.
In 2010 more than 1,550 people will die each day in the US from Cancer. That is more than 1 person for every minute, of every hour, of every day. 1,550 families every day must deal with the sorrow of losing loved ones. This disease knows no boundaries in whom it strikes or when. Cancer is also the second leading cause of death in adults coming in as second only to heart disease.
These staggering statistics are what make the efforts of The American Cancer Society (ACS) so important and why we felt compelled to take an active role in supporting the cause. The ACS donates an unbelievable $130 million annually to "research for a cure". Thanks to their efforts along with those of leagues of medical professionals, activists, and volunteers, the survival rates on average have gone from below 50% back in the late 1970's to almost 68% today. Progress has certainly been made but we cannot give up the battle until survival becomes the norm and cures are readily available.
Having personally spent close to 30 years working incredible amounts of hours and climbing the ranks from an hourly associate to a highly compensated executive in Corporate America, I "allowed" myself the excuse of having no time or adequate finances to "Give Back". Then it happened. After being involved with numerous company failures and being released from my position as the COO of a company, I was left to reflect on what I had done and what I would do going forward. Following the shock, anger, and fear, I vowed that I would work diligently to ensure I became part of the solution rather than being a bystander. It is my firm belief that no reward is larger than seeing others benefit from our efforts, no matter how small or large they may be. The fact is, no amount of time or money given to the cause of improving the world and/or the lives of all those who populate it, can ever be considered insignificant.
That is why we here at TheCandleFundraisers are extremely proud to say we are committed to Giving Back by "Burning It Forward" and are doing so by donating 1% of our sales and countless hours of our personal time to ACS. The search for a cure of this ravaging disease is one that must be supported and forged ahead every single day until the words “You Have Cancer” no longer send us reeling and thinking about how we will spend our final days or how we will move on after a stricken loved one is gone.
